Paleolithic History
Finland’s first inhabitants were most likely hunter-gatherers who arrived in the area during the Paleolithic period. These early people lived a nomadic lifestyle, moving from place to place in search of food and shelter. Not much is known about their culture or way of life, but we do know that they hunted a variety of animals, including reindeer, elk, and bears. The Paleolithic period ended around 10000 BC with the arrival of the first farmers in Finland.
These early farmers brought with them new technologies and ways of life that would slowly start to change the country.
The Corded Ware Culture
The Corded Ware culture is thought to have originated in the steppes of Russia and is associated with introducing Indo-European languages to Finland. The Corded Ware culture reached Finland around 3000 BCE, and it is characterized by its pottery, which is decorated with cord-like patterns. This culture was replaced by the Battle-Axe culture around 1700 BCE. The Battle-Axe culture is thought to have originated in the Baltic region, and it is named for its distinctive type of pottery, decorated with battle ax motifs. This culture reached Finland around 1500 BCE and lasted until about 500 BCE.
The Iron Age
The first people settled in the area that is now Finland around 9000 BCE during the Stone Age. Around 500 BCE, iron working began in Finland, leading to the development of new technologies and the rise of Finnish culture and society. During the Iron Age, Finland was divided into Suomi and Tavastia. The people of Tavastia were known for their agriculture and iron working, while the people of Suomi were known for hunting and fishing.
